LEARNING DISCUSSION

1 July 2021
0900 – 0945

Learning Objectives

  1. The diagnosis of intracranial hypertension based on current guidelines.
  2. The step wise ICP protocol and their recommendations.
  3. Treatment option for refractory intracranial hypertension in the severe head injury patient.

Synopsis of PBLD

Intracranial hypertension is a common and devastating complication of severe traumatic brain injury. Timely and effective interventions are necessary to reduce the secondary neuronal loss and minimise long term poor neurological outcomes. The discussion will focus on recognizing the pattern of elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) and early detection of refractory intracranial hypertension, the relationship between ICP, cerebral perfusion pressure (CPP) and cerebral oxygenation as well as the recommendation for each of the treatment modality. The highlight of the discussion will be on the refractory intracranial hypertension and what treatment options are available when all the other measures have failed.
